Say what you will about sci-fi YA novels, the costume designers who work on the movie versions always incorporate the most wonderful knits. As soon as I saw the cowl that Katniss wears in Catching Fire, I knew that patterns would be on Ravelry before you could say "May the odds be ever in your favor".
And I also knew that my teenage baby sister would probably love one for her birthday.
After sorting through several options, I picked this pattern, called "The Seam". It has a lot of sewing, which I was initially worried about because my stitches always look clumsy. Fortunately, with the combination of good directions and chunky yarn, the sewn stitches blended in beautifully to give the cowl a proper rustic look.
The pattern designer also added directions to add several braided pieces to make it even more cozy, but I liked it without so I left them off.
I may have to make another for myself soon!
