EATING: All of the green food. It's not a New Year's thing, it's a rebound thing. I believe I had kale in more than half the meals I ate this weekend. It's as ubiquitous to my January as peanut butter balls were to my December. Through the power of good marketing ("They're chips, baby, look!") I even got Little Miss to chow through a bowl of kale chips with me Saturday.
LISTENING: To the soundtrack of Moana. Have you seen it? If not, GO! I know Disney has been working on being more feminist with the princesses these days, but this one blasts it out of the park. She's just a girl. Who has an adventure. With a big dude (who has some issues with his mama and his big, swinging, um, "fishhook") telling her the whole way that she can't. But then she pulls her hair into power bun and does. And all without marrying anybody or kissing anybody or even wink-wink-nudging at the idea of romance. All of the girl-power feels!
READING: Sonia Sotomayor's memoir. More than even RBG--who is a rockstar on women's issues, but can be less brave when it comes to criminal law--I am a devoted Sonia fan girl. As such I've been meaning to read her book forever, so when I made a "read one book a month" New Year's resolution it was the first one I put on reserve at the library. I'm only about a third of the way through, but she's a very engaging storyteller who has lived a crazy-interesting life.
READING TO THE SMALL ONES: Kiki and Coco and Ella Bella for Little Miss. Harry Potter for the Kid. We watched the Chronicles of Narnia movies over break, so I expect we'll be starting those books soon, too.
DRINKING: So much hot tea. A local tea shop has a "cleanse" herbal blend that I've fallen in love with, but I can't figure out 100% what's in it that makes it so great. Fennel, maybe? At home I'm glugging chamomile and plain hot water with lemon. It's been so cold (20 degrees felt warm this morning) that the only way I can stand it is to warm-up from the inside out.
SMELLING: Candles. See above information about the weather for why. My favorite is pure beeswax, but I found a nice juniper and cedar candle at Target just before Christmas that is also not horrible. (I'm super picky about scented candles. Can't stand them to be overwhelming or sickly sweet or too musky or, or, or....)
HANGING ON THE WALLS: One of these darling drawings from Marilyn Pollack Naron. She has a show going at our regular coffee shop right now, and I needed to sate a January itch for new art. I got a drawing that's of the most precious little jam jars. Love! (Note: This should actually say, "SOON TO BE HANGING ON THE WALLS" because, while Sweet Husband was a dear and picked it up for me, it's been hanging out at his shop ever since. Bring my drawing home, please, Sweet Husband!)
WATCHING: A slightly-stinky goldendoodle chase a ball around my living room like a drunk rhinoceros. Someday Dame Maggie will become graceful with her long legs and huge paws, but it is not this day. (And now I'm watching the "other" Meryl's Golden Globes acceptance speech. Damn, girl.)
Happy Monday, friends!
