The first time we saw the inside of our house, we had been invited over for dinner. The owner's were friends of friends, and, via that connection, we knew they were getting ready to sell just as we were trying to buy. Rather than being formal about it, they generously said, "Come for dinner and you can check the house out."
As we sat around the table that winter evening, enjoying warm bowls of chili and good company, I got a little tingle as the voice in my brain said, "You're going to see a lot of nights like this within the walls of this room."
Whether it was a bona fide premonition or just wishful thinking, it's come true, again and again.
The latest in the line was last night, as we hosted a New Year's Day/last day of Hanukkah latke party. We made this brisket to go with our latkes and toppings, and friends brought black-eyed peas and other traditional "first day" fare to round the meal out.
Evergreens were burned, wishes were made, babies were passed from lap to lap, as the "big kids" ran amok. It was too crowded, as always, but that never seems to be that big of a deal once we're in the thick of it. Really, it just the way I wanted to spend the first day of 2017--warm and well-fed and surrounded by friends.
Happy New Year!
