I do not know, exactly, why I'm always so excited to take my two Kansas kids to the sea. I think that maybe the wide-open-ness reminds me of home, but wilder. More surprising and mysterious. I think it's such a magnificent place to me that I can't help but want to share it with them.
This was Little Miss's first time dipping her toes in the ocean--Land's End in San Francisco, to be precise--and her response did not disappoint.
The wet sand between her toes was startling at first, and she quickly sought the safety of her dada. But with his hand firmly in hers, she was brave enough to venture out into the edges of the waves, squealing and smiling with each splash.
Then we walked 'round the bend to the bigger beach. Little Miss fell asleep in her stroller, but the Kid wanted to find sea shells.
So, we left Sweet Husband and my dad to hang with Little Miss, and the two of us headed back out to meet the waves.
While this was the Kid's third time on a beach, his response didn't disappoint either. He was fascinated with every scrap of shell, with every little crab and animal track.
We don't get there much, but--as I said--it makes my heart happy to get these kids (and their mama) to the ocean for a few hours every now and then.
