In flock news, this year's babies are getting personalities.
Sweet Husband says that Miss Padme (the Polish, front and center) is stupid, but I think she's gorgeous. And Miss Fuzzy Foot (still searching for an appropriate Star Wars name) behind her is going to be interesting, too, once she grows out of her gawky phase.
I'm also quite fond of Rey (not pictured), our new Buff Orpington. Although she isn't (yet) the lap chicken that our last Buff, Tori, was, I have hope.
But speaking of growing, OMG the Freedom Rangers! We ordered three Freedom Rangers--which are supposed to be similar to Cornish X, but less genetically mucked up--on purpose as meat birds, in hopes that they would be of butchering weight in nice, cool September or October.
I'm not sure we're going to make it that long. Because chickens usually don't line up for perfect pictures, it's hard to show, but the Rangers are easily double the size of the smaller pullets. It's insane how fast they're growing.
While you're not allowed to tell him I said this, Sweet Husband is right--this year's flock does seem unusually stupid. Little Miss and I took them a bowl of strawberry tops the other day and they actually ran away in terror.
They're lucky they're pretty, and they'd better hope they're good layers!
