I suspect that many, if not most, parents at times do a wee bit of projection onto their children. "When I was a kid, I always wanted [fill in the blank], so I'm going to do exactly that for my kid."
Being a midnight reader and lover of English classics, one of my secret wants was always to have "bed hangings".
I mentioned it to the Kid one time--partly because I still think they're cool, partly as a way to give him a quiet space at bedtime--and with no more effort than that on my part, my childhood wish quickly became his, too. All of a sudden, we just had to have curtains to go across his bed nook.
As such, in due course, a curtain wire was procured.
I might have been able to get away with picking out the fabric for the curtains on my own--he would have been happy with any curtains, I think--but I dithered too much. In my indecision, he seized on "outer space", and, while it's probably not what I would have picked, the fabric he chose is absolutely magical by flashlight.
How long before the kids pull them down mid-pillow-fight? I'm not sure. They're anchored into the wall, so hopefully that's enough. For now, he and I are both enjoying his new "bed curtain fort".
