I suppose it's to be expected--it's August, after all--but this month we had just a few chicken casualties in our CSA box. I didn't feel too badly, though, because overall we've been eating like kings and queens! Here is the breakdown.
For the week of July 24th:
Blackberries :: The blackberry sauce for this pork tenderloin.
Mint :: Homemade mint extract for holiday baking.
Napa cabbage :: This Cantonese-style shrimp recipe, which the Kid loved.
Large tomatoes :: We sliced these up with our traditional "Friday night nibbles" meat and cheese board.
Heirloom cherry tomatoes :: The "Caprese Salad with Fresh Thyme Drizzle" recipe from Brown Eggs and Jam Jars.
Garlic :: Garlic goes in everything around here. T'would be stingy to keep track.
Potatoes :: Potato salad with green harissa. Didn't adore this recipe, but didn't hate it either.
For the week of July 31st:
Blackberries :: Honesty time--our lady chickens totally ate these.
Heirloom cherry tomatoes and cucumbers :: I tossed these together into an impromptu salad while we were camping. (Pictured above.)
Thyme :: Some of this bunch went to our camping tomato and cucumber salad, some of it went to dress up some fresh-caught trout.
Potatoes :: More honesty--I have no idea what happened to this bag of potatoes. They disappeared into thin air. I hope they're having a nice life somewhere.
Cantaloupe :: Two words--camping snacks.
Zucchini :: We brushed these with garlic butter, grilled them, and used them to fill out some chicken soft tacos.
For the week of August 7th:
Cantaloupe :: I convinced the Kid that cantaloupe is a very, very special dessert. Score!
11 eggs :: Quiche!
2 shallots :: The wonderful thing about shallots is that--like their cousin garlic--they last forever. We're still using these.
5 small pears :: This salad, which is so, so decadent. Not really like a salad at all.
Beets :: This smoked beet salad, which was a revelation on both smoked beets and cottage cheese.
4 tomatoes :: These were smashed and bubbled into a fresh spaghetti sauce.
3 cucumbers :: Again (bad, bad, bad) chickens. :(
For the week of August 13th:
Cherry tomatoes :: I sent these to school with the Kid, who wanted to take some from our garden as a snack. We didn't quite have enough of our own, so these rounded out the supply nicely!
Slicer tomatoes and cucumbers :: Gazpacho!
Okra :: I used this bag to make some pickled okra, which--as it turns out--Little Miss *hearts* all the much. I swear I found the recipe on "Food in Jars", but I can't find it now. Perhaps in one of Marisa's cookbooks?
Purple Viking potatoes :: Smashed potatoes! New to me, but fun.
Zucchini :: These zuke tortillas, which are my new obsession!
Raspberries :: This tart that I can't stop talking about.
Cucumbers :: This little cuc salad, which we ate with BBQ chicken and rice.
Anyone else still playing along at home? Or is the rollover to September dampening your CSA enthusiasm?
