I try to be all, "I plan my garden out carefully," but really sometimes veggies get stuck in because I'm at the nursery and "ohhh, shiny things!"
Which is what happened with these potatoes. I grabbed a bag of seed potatoes in a moment of why-not, and then got home and had no where to put them.
Except, we had two big plastic tubs that were empty, and a sunny spot along the back porch. I drilled several holes in the bottom, laid in some dirt, and my "ghetto" potato garden was born.
I layered more dirt in every few days until the bins were full, and then I didn't touch them again until today. The plants had died back without ever blooming, so I was pretty sure they were just tubs of rotten seed potatoes.
Lo and behold, I was wrong. As I dumped out the dirt, several red potatoes tumbled out. The Kid pilfered two and ran inside to show his papa, who came out to help me harvest the second tub.
Some of them are pretty tiny, to be sure, but they're not a bad harvest considering how little work I put in.
Potato salad, here we come!
