I seem to have become "the chicken lady". Every article, every funny meme--if it's related to chickens I get it sent to me at least five times.
It's weird, because the chickens are not all that I do, or even really a huge part of my life. I mean, we love our girls, but really they're ten minutes in the morning, ten minutes at night. Not a big central piece of my day, even.
One good side effect of our chicken over-saturation, though, is that when something really good comes along, I tend to perk up and take notice. Such was that case with Millie's Chickens, a children's book that Tracy alerted me to a few weeks ago.
In beautiful illustrations and a whimsical (but not annoying, c'mon fellow parents you know what I'm talking about) rhyme, Millie follows a little girl through the day as she takes care of her flock of chickens. She feeds them, collects their eggs, and keeps them safe from predators. Then, at the end, there are about three pages of non-fiction info, explaining roosters and pullets and chicks and eggs--all in terms that kids can understand.
I was completely charmed! But that doesn't really matter, of course, because the only opinion that matters around here as far as children's books go is the Kid's.
To that end, I read Millie three times before it had been in the house for ten minutes, and it's gotten several repeats at bedtime since then. (It's beating out some of the train books. Hallelujah and amen and thank you very much Tracy!)
Really-truly, we're loving this one. And--because Tracy is awesome--you can check it out too!
Tracy has generously offered to giveaway one softbound copy of Millie's Chickens, along with a sweet little chick finger puppet. To win, go check out Tracy's page on Barefoot Books and leave a comment below letting me know you did. I'll pick a winner next Wednesday, but if you can't wait that long use the code "SPRING2015" to get 20% off of any purchase before May 31st. Good luck!
[Disclosure: I was given a free copy of Millie for review purposes. But, for-reals, getting picked over the train books!!!]
