The Perseid meteor shower is this week. It's one of my favorite summer events. I can remember going out as a little kid with my Dad to watch it. We'd wait until about midnight, when it was good and dark, and bundle up with our lawn chairs and some hot cocoa. (This was in California, it gets chilly there at night unlike in the steamy Midwest.) Then we'd drive out away from the city lights, and watch--mostly in silent awe--for hours.
If you've never done it I encourage you to try some night. The shower peaked in the wee-smalls of Tuesday morning, but there still should be plenty to see for the rest of this week, at least. Here's some more info.
