Things I Want to Remember

The way her breath smells.  People talk about wanting to eat baby fingers and toes, but I'm a breath sniffer all the way.  I put my nose right up to her mouth when she's sleeping and just inhale.  I can't even hardly describe it.  It's floral, but not obvious.  Milky, but clean.  It's the best thing I've smelled in my whole life.

That afternoon last week when she fell asleep on my belly and I just picked up my book and let her.  I read a little, dozed a little, watched the setting sun turn the tuft of hair on the back of her head all golden.

How she seems to like it when I sing.  The Kid loved being read to, even when he was tiny.  She doesn't care for that much yet, but she loves when I hum along to "Riptide".

The precise color of her eyes.  They're slate grey, like a little Athena.  I'm sure they'll change eventually, but they're so perfect right now, taking the world in.

The way she doesn't quite seem to know where she is yet when she wakes up.  I think she's still not sure about this transition earth-side.  She likes to sleep on my chest, and her eyes are always a little confused for just a few seconds when they blink open.  Then it's, "Oh, you're here still.  OK, good."
